I understand your concern for a more hard news based paper; however in the early stages it's important to build good will with the school until we can support the newspaper with our own advertising.
In a private university it's much harder to write controversial stories and get away with it. When I wrote controversial stories at Flo Valley (publicly funded) they threatened to cut our funding. They even took my scholarship away once, which I fought and won back later. Anyway, be patient, in the future (I hope) we will have an editorial page for the students.
